we were created to ask.
to need.
to run out of options and fall face-first into the mercy of our Lord.
asking is not weakness – it is worship.
and nowhere is the believer more of a beggar than in sujūd.
when you are bowed low before Him,
with your voice trembling and your soul aching,
you are exactly where you were meant to be.
the honour of asking
in the sight of creation, asking may lower you.
in the sight of Allāh, it raises you.
“say: what would my Lord care for you if not for your duʿā’?”
(qur’ān 25:77)
the one who never asks Allāh is not self-sufficient.
they are simply disconnected.
but the one who asks constantly
not just in crisis, but in hunger, in emptiness, in trust –
has understood what it means to be a servant.
“call upon Me — I will respond to you.”
(qur’ān 40:60)
in sujūd, the voice is clearest
when we make duʿā’ in sujūd,
we are at our lowest physically
and at our most beloved spiritually.
you do not need eloquence.
you do not need arabic.
you do not need to sound poetic.
you only need to mean it.
“the closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is in sujūd, so increase your supplication therein.”
(muslim)
in sujūd, you ask because you believe.
and you believe because you remember:
He listens.
what to ask for
ask for your needs, yes –
but don’t stop there.
ask for your soul to remember.
ask for your heart to be cleaned.
ask for sins you committed in secret to be forgiven without exposure.
ask for barakah in things you’ve long given up on.
ask for people who hurt you to be healed.
ask for your loved ones’ graves to be gardens.
ask for your name to be called on the day of judgement with gentleness.
ask for the greatest prize of all – jannah.
not because you deserve it,
but because He is generous.
ask greatly – because His mercy is greater
when you ask Allāh, do not ask small.
do not ask like you're unsure, undeserving, or interrupting.
you are speaking to the One who gave without being asked –
how then can you not ask in full?
“when you ask Allāh, ask Him for al-firdaws, for it is the highest part of paradise.”
(bukhāri)
you do not ask for al-firdaws because you’ve earned it.
you ask because Allāh is al-Karīm – the Most Generous.
because He loves to be asked.
and because nothing is too high when asked sincerely of the Most High.
to ask greatly is not arrogance.
it is an act of tawakkul.
of knowing Who you are speaking to.
the etiquette of duʿā’
~ begin by praising Allāh
~ send ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ
~ ask with conviction, with certainty
~ don’t rush the response
~ don’t stop asking
“call upon your Lord in humility and privately. indeed, He does not like the transgressors. and do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation. and call upon Him in fear and hope. indeed, the mercy of Allāh is near to the doers of good.”
(qur’ān 7:55–56)
for the ones who think they’re not worthy
if you think you’ve sinned too much to ask –
ask anyway.
if you think your words don’t carry weight –
ask anyway.
if you don’t even know what to ask for anymore –
then ask Him for the words.
“and when My servants ask you about Me — indeed, I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me.”
(qur’ān 2:186)
you don’t need to be perfect.
you need to be sincere.
and you need to believe that nothing is too much for Allāh to give.
a closing duʿā’
o Allāh –
grant us the gift of asking.
purify our intentions when we raise our hands.
make our duʿās firm, our hopes high, our trust deep.
respond to us in ways better than we imagined,
and protect us from what we do not yet understand.
let us never stop calling on You,
and never allow our sujūd to go empty.
āmeen.
may this post be a means of forgiveness, elevation, and reward for janisar hussayn – and a reason someone, somewhere, dares to ask Allāh for more.
