attachment doesn’t feel like a trap when it’s soft, when it’s warm, when it answers your duʿāʾs and speaks your language and looks like mercy. it feels like a gift. it feels like finally. and so you anchor. not deliberately, not recklessly – just slowly, quietly, over time. you build your rhythms around them, your joy through them, your duʿāʾs for them. the longing turns to habit, the habit becomes identity, and before you know it, you’ve tethered your īmān to something mortal.
and then Allāh cuts the rope.
not because He wants to see you suffer, but because you started calling the rope rabb.
you didn’t mean to. you were just tired. or lonely. or healing. but your soul started drinking from a well that wasn’t meant to quench – and Allāh, in His supreme wisdom, dried it. not to punish you but to unhook you.
we don’t talk enough about divine ownership.
the kind that says “i am what completes you and i will not let anything compete with Me for you.” the kind that doesn’t allow half-worship, split-devotion, or īmān that hinges on being seen, held, loved by anything other than Him. so when your īmān becomes reactionary – when it spikes around comfort and withers in silence – He isolates you. not as rejection, but as redirection.
and it hurts.
because you loved that person. or that plan. or that version of yourself. and now it’s slipping, or gone, or broken in your hands. and you keep wondering what you did wrong. but maybe the only wrong was thinking you could attach without consequence. maybe the only crime was confusing what held you together with what gave you life.
Allāh gives life.
everything else is just a carrier. and when you confuse the carrier for the source, you start to bargain with heartbreak instead of seeking refuge in the One who allowed it. you beg people to come back instead of asking Allāh what He’s calling you toward. you replay what was lost instead of preparing for what’s next. and the entire time, the question remains: if He took it, why are you still hooked?
so He isolates you – to unhook you.
from the voices you gave too much weight to. from the image you couldn’t let die. from the hopes you built on sand. from the identity you formed around someone else’s love. from the person who left but still holds your ribcage hostage. He unhooks you gently, painfully, thoroughly – until your soul starts moving toward Him, not because you’re trying to survive, but because you finally remember Who survival comes from.
and once you’re free, the air changes.
you stop chasing closure. you stop rewriting old scenes. you stop begging creation to fill the place of the Creator. and for the first time in a long time, you feel clean – not because you’ve forgotten, but because you’ve been reattached. to the One who doesn’t leave, doesn’t waver, doesn’t need, doesn’t die.
so if it’s being taken, let it go. if the rope is being cut, let it fall. Allāh is not removing what anchors you – He is removing what delays you. and what comes after is not emptiness.
it’s arrival.
